About the Artist

Merilyn Burch-Carney

  • Merilyn was born in Sydney, Australia
  • She studied at the National Art School
  • Worked as a Commercial Artist
  • Studied Teaching then taught Art in Sydney high schools
  • She moved to the Mudgee/Gulgong district in 1991 where she worked as both a teacher and artist
  • Merilyn retired from teaching in 2003 and now works full time as an artist.
  • Merilyn has won many awards over the years and has had work selected to hang in many exhibitions including the Blake Prize, the Willoughby Art Prize, the Lexus Mortimore Prize and numerous local art shows. She has been a guest artist and has had work published in the Artist's Palette Magazine. Merilyn has works hanging in many private collection around the world including the USA, Britain, Germany and Australia.

My story

Merilyn studied at the Sydney Art School and later worked in advertising with Guy Warren and Bryce Courteney. After graduating from Teacher's College Merilyn taught Art in Sydney High Schools. One of her now famous school pupils was artist Ben Quilty.

Merilyn moved to the Gulgong district in 1991 and taught in local schools while establishing herself as an artist of note in the mid-west. She enjoys her travelling painting trips twice a year and puts the finishing touches to her on-location work in her Yarrawonga Studio.

Merilyn's work have won many awards and have even been published in Artist's Palette Magazine. Her paintings have been hung in prestigious exhibitions including the Blake Prize, Willoughby Art Prize, Lexus Mortimore Prize and the Equine Art Prize and are hanging in many private collections in Australia, UK, Germany and the USA.
